Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that breed rapidly, live in groups, and are among the most invasive pests. One of the most common types that plague home and business owners in Alabama include the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). As with most cockroaches, the German cockroach will invade places that afford them food, water, and shelter. The species typically have a body length of approximately ½ of an inch, six legs, and a dark red or brown colored body with darker markings that run parallel.

The Dangers Of German Cockroaches

German cockroaches pose a host of risks to human health, and create property damage. They often burrow through building materials inside a structure, and can chew through and contaminate food packages made of cardboard, paper, or thin plastic. As they travel through the premises, they spread urine and feces that cause stains.    Cockroaches are known to carry salmonellosis, cholera, typhoid fever, and several other types of disease. If a large group forms in one area, a foul odor will likely become detectable. Those with allergies and respiratory concerns, including asthma, may experience adverse reactions and difficulty breathing. Because these pests are generally active after dark, seeing them during the daytime may suggest that a large number of cockroaches exist, which has created food shortages.

Tips For Prevention

  • Limiting access to food sources is critical in preventing cockroaches. Promptly place leftovers in sealed containers, and avoid leaving dirty dishes and uneaten pet food out overnight.
  • Regularly clean kitchen areas by wiping down countertops, and sweeping floors around and beneath appliances.
  • Trash cans containing food scraps should have tightly fitting lids.
  • Use a durable caulk or sealant to fill any cracks or openings near the foundation along the property's exterior to prevent access. Install sweeps to the bases of any poorly sealing exterior doors.
  • Repair leaking faucets and/or pipes below sinks to limit water sources, and excessive moisture.

Responding To Intrusions From German Cockroaches

Property owners often underestimate the potential difficulty involved with completely eradicating a cockroach infestation. Many people try store-bought do-it-yourself treatment options that are marketed as being capable of quickly eliminating these pests. Unfortunately, days or weeks later, many of these efforts prove to be unsuccessful because these sprays, powders, and granular formulas provide only short-term results.    The best course of action after suspecting problems with cockroaches, bed bugs, fire ants, and other troublesome pests is to consult with a licensed local extermination team that is properly trained and equipped to get the job done!
